Where should I live if I need to work in the Stamford CT area?

I am a young professional that just graduated and accepted a job and my territory is in the Stamford CT/ White Plains NY area. I want to try and find a place where the rent under $1200 but I don't want to live in a complete dump either. Are there any nearby cities or towns that fit my criteria?
